What IS JOULIE-16?
Joulie-16 is the complete battery management system with Active Balance.
WHAT CONNECTIONS ARE AVAILABLE?

From the left: Current sensor, Ethernet, USB, CAN, Disable Charge/Discharge, temperature sensors, relay, balancer inputs, switch/LED (possibley remote). See Documentation. The inputs are partly clamp connectors (Phoenix) for more flexibility. The balancer inputs and cables are Automotive certified cables from ERNI.

is the can interface necessary?

No, each inverter can work with the BMS. Additional, electrically isolated outputs (Disable Charge / Discharge) can be used to control inverters without an interface.

What type of current sensor is recommended?
We use LEMM HASS 100 current sensors. Any equivalent type should work. Note that both + and - signals are required.
What type of Relay is recommended/required?
The relay is controlled by a pulse >50 ms, <100 ms for bi-stable relays. We recommend relays from LAYHER AG Type 400.
How is the Temperature Measurement?
The BMS is able to measure 16 temperatures based on NTC 10, 3940. It comes with 4 RJ45 plugs, each for 4 external temperature sensors. You can use CellCon NTC boards on the cell connectors or place temperature sensors anywhere in the battery. The BMS also works without temperature sensors.
CAN I CONNECT LESS THAN 16 CELLS, respective CAN I cascade MORE BMS FOR MORE THAN 16 CELLS?
No. it's possible only with Joulie-4c. Joulie-16 is intent to be used exclusively for 16S / 48V.
How can a PARAMETER UPDATE be done?
Use a terminal program such as TeraTerm, and the BMS Shell to change parameters.

CAN I connect several JOULIE-16 in PARALLEL?
If a CAN protocol to the inverter is necessary, no, since all CAN objects are equal. To build up larger systems with parallel memory blocks, use Master (see below), which takes over the communication with the Joulie-16 and the inverters and controls the entire system on the battery side.
What is the power consumption in switched-off mode?

When the BMS is switched off, the board is de-energized. Only the balancers are connected directly to the corresponding ICs and consume about 50 mW. In active operation without balancing activities, the power consumption is about 1.8W.

What similar products does AUTARCTECH still offer?

AutarcTech offers a cascadable 4S / 12V Active Balance BMS based on the same components as Joulie-16. This BMS is called Joulie-4c (cascadable). A separate manual describes the functions and the use. See Documentation.

What IS MASTER?
Master is a module developed by us, which on the one hand takes over the communication to the Joulie-16 in a cluster by means of a Linux computer (Phytec) and, on the other hand, the CAN communication to the inverters. In addition, it monitors and controls the individual Joulie-16. Master has 7 free inputs to a built-in switch to connect up to 7 Joulie-16 (battery packs). A +5 V / 2 A output is optionally available for extensions with additional, external switches. Thus, more - many more - can be connected.

What IS Joulie-4c?
Joulie-4c (cascadable) is a 4S / 12V cascadable Active Balance BMS based on the same technique as Joulie-16. The use is intended for 12V batteries, 24V batteries up to 800V batteries. Joulie-4c is expanding our product portfolio in the direction of greater flexibility. Joulie-4c works as a MASTER / SLAVE concept. Each module operates independent of the MASTER, including voltage and temperature monitoring of the connected cells. MASTER and SLAVE communicate via a serial interface. In addition, an additional board CTRL may be connected, that takes over the communication via CAN with an inverter.
The MASTER has all the necessary outputs to control a relay, it also comes with galvanically isolated outputs Disable Charge / Discharge, and has an analog output for the SOC. The current sensor is also connected to the MASTER. So this is a 4S / 12V standalone BMS. See Joulie-4c documentation.
